What exactly is
Plant Molecular Pharming?
In nature, a type of plant similar to tobacco called Nicotiana benthamiana has a very unique relationship with a type of bacteria called Agrobacterium, in which Agrobacterium transfers its DNA into plant cells so they produce special metabolites that serve as a dedicated nutrient source for the bacteria. In our platform, we harness this same DNA-transfer mechanism by replacing the native genes in that DNA plasmid with expression cassettes so the plant transiently produces high levels of recombinant proteins instead.
